What to ask before you buy a private AI computer
A private AI computer is a real purchase for a small office. Here are the questions worth asking any supplier, including us, before you pay anything.
- Where do my documents and questions go? You want a clear answer. On a local setup, they should stay on the computer in your office, apart from optional web search.
- Is web search on or off by default? It should be off unless you ask for it, and you should be told what leaves the office when it is on.
- Which AI model will it use, and can it be changed? A good supplier names the model in the quote and explains why it suits your documents.
- How many people can use it at once, and was that tested? Ask whether it is tested with several people asking questions at the same time before handover.
- Is there a subscription, and what does support cover? Ask what you get after handover, whether support or backup is included, and make sure the answer is in writing.
- What is the total price, including GST? Get a written quote, not just a "from" price. Component prices move, so a quote should say what it is valid for.
- What happens if I cancel? Ask how much of your prepayment comes back before and after parts are ordered. Our own answer is on the builds page.
- Who can see staff chat history? On some setups an administrator can review conversations. It is fair to tell your staff.
- How do I add or remove people? Each person should have their own login that you can add or remove yourself.
- What are my rights if something is wrong? Consumer guarantee rights under Australian law still apply. Ask how the supplier handles faults.
If a supplier cannot answer these plainly, treat that as information. Our answers are on the builds page, the FAQ and how it works.
